Curtains

How can I block light from my window without using aluminum foil? I have curtains but the strong security light outside still comes in around them. I don’t own my place so I can’t remove curtains.
I also want to be able to have full light during the day

I am so sick of ugly curtains/drapes that people put in their houses, especially when they face them so you can see them from outside.
Why must people persist with this practice?

I have this bay window facing a busy street which calls for privacy especially at night. I am to the point of hating bay windows because I don’t know what to use on it. Can I use cafe curtains? My windows are the crank out type so that rules out wooden shutters. Any suggestions before I use a sludge hammer on the window?
